The Senate on Thursday is holding its first listening to on the Chinese language spy balloon that floated over the US final week earlier than it was shot down over the weekend.

The Senate Appropriations Committee will hear testimony from prime Pentagon officers, together with Lt. Gen. Douglas Sims II, the director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Employees, and Vice Admiral Sara Joyner, director of drive construction, assets and assessments for the Joint Chiefs of Employees.

The listening to comes because the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard full a restoration operation of the downed spy balloon roughly six miles off the coast of South Carolina. On Saturday, Biden gave the order to take the 200-foot-tall spy balloon out of the sky. The operation resulted in an F-22 fighter jet shearing a gap within the backside of the balloon with a sidewinder missile.

Pentagon spokesman U.S. Air Drive Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder stated Wednesday that Secretary of Protection Lloyd Austin referred to as his Chinese language counterpart on Saturday following the army mission. Chinese language officers didn’t settle for the decision.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated Wednesday that the U.S. intelligence group was learning the balloon and that the U.S. would proceed to replace allies in addition to international locations around the globe that could be victims of Chinese language espionage.

“America was not the one goal of this broader program, which has violated the sovereignty of nations throughout 5 continents,” Blinken stated on the State Division.

“In our engagements, we’re once more listening to from our companions that the world expects China and the US to handle our relationship responsibly. That is exactly what we got down to do. We proceed to induce China to do the identical,” he added.
