The scene comes late within the movie because the ship begins to go down. Most of the passengers within the lower-class cabins have been locked behind steel gates, and so they know they’re going to drown. We see a clip of Goldstein’s character telling her little youngsters an Irish fairytale of a land of everlasting youth and sweetness, making an attempt to get them to sleep earlier than they notice what’s occurring.
